Q - ARE YOU CRAZY?
A - Not that I am aware of, although sometimes I do question this myself :)
Q - So what are you trying to say? What's the point?
A - I'm trying to bring awareness to the fact that relationships take work. If you read the stats on divorce in Canada like I do, you'd see
that divorce is an epidemic which affects just about everyone in society in some way or another.
Q - Ok, so what stats are you talking about?
A - In 2006, there were 1,629,490 divorced Canadians or about 5% of the population. More then 1/3 of marriages will end in divorce
before the thirtieth anniversary. As of 2006, there were 1,414,060 single parent families in Canada - or approximately 15.9% of all
families. (Source: Statistics Canada)
Q - So what you're saying is people who get married should stay together at "all costs"?
A - No, of course not. I realize that sometimes the distance is just too great to be repaired. Sometimes separation and divorce is
the only solution. What I'm saying is that the modern family is under immense societal pressure these days, unlike generations of
the past. I'm riding across Canada to say that there is help out there and that sometimes there is more to gain by working through
your issues and developing a stronger relationship. If divorce is inevitable, counseling services can at the very least assist in
mediating issues and hopefully stopping things from ending up in the hands of lawyers. In the end divorce is a highly emotional
issue, wouldn't it be nice if we could offer someone free counseling during this time?
Q - Are you independently wealthy or something? How is it you can afford to ride across Canada for over 2 1/2 months?
A - Very good question, I can't. The reality is I make only enough a the moment to cover my everyday expenses. For me this ride is
personal. I have recently suffered through a difficult break up and I was given a choice. Allow myself to sink further into depression,
or fight back with something extremely pure and positive. This ride is my choice.
Q - Oh, so you're going to be using this money for yourself?
A - Another good question, yes and no. We are currently holding fundraisers locally to raise money for the bike and all
the necessary gear it's going to take to make this happen. The cost for this ride is estimated as follows:
$5000 - Bike, gear, appropriate clothes, plane fare to Vancouver, tent etc.
$6400 - Daily expenses, Food, camp fees incidentals estimated at $80 / day times 80 days
$4400 - My monthly expenses which have to be covered while I'm away and not working so my boys have a home, and I have a home
to come back to.
Q - So you ARE benefitting from this! I knew it!
A - As I said yes and no. The funds being raised right now are to purchase the gear, our goal is $5000 which will get me there. Once I
land and begin the journey, I'll have officers from the facebook group who will be raising pledges on a per province basis. I will be
traveling through 9 provinces in total. In other words, people can pledge say $5 per province, or $45 total. the funds will be placed into
an account which i have no direct access to without a third party signing off on. As I clear a province, the previous provinces funds will
be made available to me. this way, should the unthinkable occur, the appropriate people will receive their money back.
Regarding my monthly expenses, I am not profiting from this ride. My only hope is to have my basic living expenses paid while I am out
trying to raise money, after all if I had stayed home I could have done that for myself :) Also, it is important to note that i do not have direct
access to donated funds. In order to sustain the purity of the message, I have asked a friend who works for corrections Canada to direct
the funds. She is the closest thing I know to law enforcement lol. Any funds not used directly for the ride, will be redonated back into the
United Church's Mission and Service fund which helps people everyday in miraculous ways.
Q - So what exactly do YOU get out of this then aside from a sore back side?
A - Since I began planning this journey, I have met so many wonderful, generous people. People who everyday are helping to restore my
faith in humanity. I also hear stories of how divorce has affected people in devastating ways and how my ride has helped them as well.
I'm also hoping to rediscover myself on the route and emerge a new person on the other side.
